Alliance, Nebraska, sat in the Sandhills region of the state's northwest panhandle in 1908, a railroad town built around the Burlington line that had reached the area in the 1880s. Its economy rested on the railroad, stockyards and ranching, as cattle and sheep from the surrounding open range moved through local shipping points on their way to eastern markets. The town had grown quickly after the Burlington established division facilities there, and its streets and business blocks reflected a settlement still expanding with homesteaders who had come to the high plains in the years after 1900. Alliance residents in 1908 would have known their town as a rail junction and a gateway to the western Sandhills, where dry farming and cattle operations defined daily life.
