Camp Custer, on the outskirts of Battle Creek, Michigan, was built in 1917, after the United States entered the First World War that April. The 337th and 338th Infantry regiments, shown in this 1917 panoramic photograph, were organized there as part of the 85th Division, which drew heavily on young men from Michigan. Battle Creek was then a manufacturing city, best known for its breakfast cereal companies, and its rail lines and factories helped supply the wartime camp with food and materials. For the soldiers and the townspeople alike, the camp changed daily life almost overnight, bringing crowds of recruits, new construction, and a steady stream of trains through the city. Many of the men photographed here were still learning drill and camp routine when they posed, not yet aware of what the war overseas would ask of them.
