Camp Custer, near Battle Creek in south-central Michigan, was built in 1917 as one of the National Army training cantonments that the federal government set up after the United States entered the First World War that April. It was named for George Armstrong Custer, the cavalry officer killed at the Little Bighorn in 1876. Draftees and volunteers from across Michigan and the Midwest arrived to learn drill, marksmanship, and trench warfare in a camp that grew almost overnight into a town of wooden barracks, mess halls, and training fields. Battle Creek, already known for its breakfast cereal factories, was a small industrial city of a few tens of thousands people, and the camp reshaped its streets, shops, and rail traffic. Local residents watched troop trains come and go and followed the war through hometown men who now wore uniforms.
