Camp Custer rose in 1917 on open land near Battle Creek, Michigan, where the army laid out the long rows of wooden barracks, drill grounds, and supply yards visible across this view. Congress passed the Selective Service Act in May 1917, and many of the men who filled those barracks had registered with local draft boards on June 5, the first national registration day. Battle Creek, a manufacturing city served by major railroad lines, had to absorb thousands of new soldiers, visitors, and freight into streets and rail yards built for a much smaller population. Farmers and shopkeepers from the surrounding counties watched the camp expand into a community that changed the rhythm of daily life across the Battle Creek valley.
