Battle Creek, Michigan, in 1917 was a railroad and factory city when the federal government began building Camp Custer on farmland at its edge. The post, named for the Civil War cavalry leader George Armstrong Custer, was one of the large training cantonments the army set up that year, and its new streets gave the valley a sudden influx of young men. Local carpenters, teamsters, and lumber dealers found steady work supplying the construction, while farm families in the surrounding townships sold hay, dairy goods, and produce to the post. Troop trains passed through town often enough that their whistles became a familiar sound to residents who had seldom seen so many uniforms on their streets.
