In 1917 Battle Creek, Michigan, was a city of factories and rail lines, and the new Camp Custer on its western edge had to house and feed a training population within months. Contractors hauled in lumber, plumbing pipe, and electrical wire, and local men found steady work as carpenters, laborers, and teamsters on the building crews. Because the post drew workers and recruits from well outside the county, boarding houses and rooms for rent in town filled far beyond their usual capacity. Schools and churches adjusted their schedules and crowded their rooms to fit the newcomers, and the camp soon became a regular subject of talk in the city's shops and on its front porches.
