Camp Custer, outside Battle Creek, Michigan, in 1917 drew much of its support from the Liberty Loan bond campaigns the federal government ran that year to pay for the war. Battle Creek's churches, women's clubs, and Red Cross chapters organized knitting, bandage rolling, and canteen work for the recruits on the post, while local merchants sold bonds and hung war posters in their storefronts. Factories and rail depots in town handled heavier loads of lumber, freight, and supplies, and employers were asked to keep production steady while sending young men to training. For many families in the valley, the year was measured less by battles overseas than by the letters and parades that linked home to the training grounds.
