In 1917, farm fields west of Battle Creek, Michigan, gave way to a federal training site almost as fast as crews could raise it. The War Department organized the 85th Division there with men drawn largely from Michigan and neighboring states, and the division took the name Custer Division from the post. Work crews cleared land that had until recently been farm country and laid out company streets for recruits who arrived with little military experience. By autumn 1918, influenza was moving through the crowded barracks, filling the camp hospital and killing many soldiers before the armistice in November. Battle Creek residents who had watched the post rise now counted the war's cost in their own neighborhoods.
