Camp Custer, near Battle Creek in Calhoun County, Michigan, was built in 1917 as one of the National Army cantonments created after the United States entered the First World War. Construction crews raised rows of barracks, mess halls, and drill fields on farmland outside the city, and the work drew workers and contractors into a town already known for its cereal and food manufacturing. The camp was named for George Armstrong Custer, and it would train draftees from Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana for service in France. Battle Creek residents watched the new post change their town's population, traffic, and daily life almost overnight. This aerial view records the layout as the camp was filling with recruits, months before the influenza epidemic of 1918 would strain its hospitals.
