Kalamazoo, Michigan, in 1919 was a city of a few tens of thousands, with Kalamazoo College, founded in 1833, and the Western State Normal School, which trained teachers, anchoring its schools and civic life. Michigan Central trains ran through the city on the line between Chicago and Detroit, carrying freight and passengers past the Kalamazoo River and its older industrial districts. The 126th Infantry, a Michigan National Guard regiment federalized for the war, was among the state's units whose men were coming home that year. A formation of its soldiers drew relatives and townspeople eager to see who had returned. For a community that had spent two years reading casualty lists and waiting for letters, such a gathering marked a turn from anxiety toward ordinary routine, even as many families were still counting their losses.
