Battle Creek, Michigan, in 1913 was a city of about 35,000 people that had grown rich on breakfast cereal and health institutions. C.W. Post's Postum Cereal Company and the Kellogg company, which was then still the Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flake Company, employed large numbers of local workers, and the Battle Creek Sanitarium, founded by John Harvey Kellogg, drew patients and visitors from across the country. The city's rail lines, including the Michigan Central, made it a convenient stop for travelers and business people, and conventions and conferences were a regular part of its civic life. The title identifies this gathering as a Battle Creek conference, so its visitors and organizers would have known the city as a center of health reform and food manufacturing, a place where ideas about diet and wellness were turned into products and programs.
