Flint, Michigan, in 1913 was in the middle of a fast shift from carriage making to automobile manufacturing, and that change was reshaping the city's economy. The Weston-Mott Company, which made wire and wooden wheels, had joined William C. Durant's General Motors in 1909, so its plant supplied parts to the automakers growing up around the Buick works and other GM divisions. Workers arriving from farms and smaller towns swelled the population, and housing, streetcars, and schools struggled to keep pace with the new arrivals. Residents knew their city as the "Vehicle City," a nickname that reflected how much of the local payroll now depended on the car business.
