Boyne City, Michigan, in 1913 was a small lake town at the head of Lake Charlevoix, where the Boyne River meets the water. Its economy had been built on lumber, and the sawmills that drew workers during the 1880s and 1890s had by then cut much of the nearby white pine, so residents were turning toward farming, the tannery and other trades, and the summer visitors who came for fishing and boating. Many of the people living there would have known the town as a lumber port that was still finding its footing after the timber boom. The panoramic view records a community at a turning point, when the mills were no longer the whole story and the lakefront was beginning to matter as much as the river.
