Bay City, Michigan, in 1912 was a Saginaw Valley city whose working population included many German and Polish families, who lived on the east and south sides and worked in the factories and rail yards along the lower Saginaw River. That year's presidential campaign, in which Theodore Roosevelt ran on the Progressive ticket, drew heated debate in Michigan newspapers and on street corners. Parish picnics, lodge meetings, and local bands gave neighborhood life much of its rhythm. Residents knew their town as a river city still shaped by its lumber past and its newer industries, with commerce and daily work tied closely to the water.
