Bay City, Michigan, in 1912 was a river city that was moving past its lumber years. The pine forests of the Saginaw Valley had been cut over by then, and mills along the Saginaw River were closing or shrinking. Beet sugar processing had taken hold in the region, and the Defoe boatyards were known for building fine wooden boats and launches. Residents would have associated the town with the river traffic, the factory whistles, and the growing city of streetcars and brick storefronts that replaced the old sawmill wharves.
