Gladstone, Michigan, sits on the shore of Little Bay de Noc in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, across the water from Escanaba, and in 1912 it was still a young town shaped by the region's timber and shipping economy. Lumber, iron ore moving through Lake Michigan ports, and the railroads that carried goods to and from the bay drew workers and families to the area, and the town's fortunes rose and fell with those industries. Residents of the 1910s would have known Gladstone as a working waterfront community where mill jobs, dock labor, and rail connections mattered most. Civic life centered on local churches, schools, and businesses along the main streets, as the settlement continued to grow into the small city it would become.
