In 1912, the Michigan Agricultural College campus east of Lansing was a place where young women and men studied side by side, which was unusual at many American colleges. Women had been admitted as regular students since 1870, and by the 1910s they took courses in domestic science and home economics alongside the men's work in agronomy and horticulture. Horses still did most of the heavy work on the college farms and on the county farms around them. The academic calendar followed the planting and harvest seasons, and many students left campus during the busiest weeks to help on family farms. Lansing, meanwhile, was a growing railroad town, and its residents knew the college as the state's leading school for farm education.
