In 1910, Houghton sat on the Keweenaw Peninsula of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, at the center of the Lake Superior copper country, where mining companies and the shipping that carried their metal shaped nearly every part of local life. The Michigan College of Mines, founded in Houghton in 1885, trained engineers and mine managers for that industry, so the campus was closely tied to the copper trade that filled the town's mills, docks, and boarding houses. Mine work drew immigrants from Finland, Cornwall, Italy, and other places, and their churches, halls, and newspapers gave the district a mix of languages and traditions. Residents would have known Houghton as a copper town first and a college town second, with its economy rising and falling on mine output and the prices set in distant markets.
