Ripley, in Houghton County on Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula, sat in the heart of the copper country in 1910, when mining was the region's main source of wages. Mines and stamp mills along the peninsula drew workers from Finland, Cornwall, Italy, Croatia, and other lands, so neighborhoods there often sounded like several countries at once. Houghton, across the Portage Lake waterway, served as the county seat and was home to the Michigan College of Mines, which trained engineers for the copper and iron industries. Ore and refined copper moved out by rail and by lake shipping, and the rhythm of shift whistles and ore trains shaped daily life for residents who knew the district mainly as a place of hard work and cold winters.
