In 1910, Quincy and Hancock stood on the shores of Portage Lake in Michigan's Keweenaw copper country. Copper mining drove the local economy, with the Quincy Mining Company's shafts climbing the hills above town and its smelting works along the water. Miners and mill hands came from Finland, Cornwall, Italy, Croatia and elsewhere, and their churches, halls and boarding houses gave the streets a many-tongued character. Hancock also housed the Michigan College of Mines, which trained engineers for the mines. Labor unrest over wages and working conditions would erupt into the great copper strike of 1913 and 1914.
