Michigan Agricultural College sat on rolling farmland just east of Lansing in 1910, and the photograph captures it at a moment of steady expansion. Founded in 1855 as the first agricultural college in the United States, the school had by then grown into a major center for scientific farming, veterinary work, and engineering, with its experimental fields and barns drawing visiting farmers from across the state. Lansing itself was a manufacturing city of carriage works, furniture makers, and auto parts firms, and the college's graduates often went back to rural counties to teach, advise, and run demonstration plots. Students of the period lived under strict military-style rules, drilling and marching in uniform, and the campus was the place where many Michigan families first encountered the new agricultural sciences.
