Michigan Agricultural College in 1912 occupied open farmland east of Lansing, at a time when Michigan's farm economy was shifting from grain toward dairying, fruit growing, and specialty crops. Students of that year encountered the college's barns, orchards, and herds as working parts of their lessons rather than as display plots. The school's extension work reached county seats, where farmers gathered for institutes on crop rotation and livestock care. Many students came from small towns and family farms, and they often returned home to county advisory posts or to run the farms they had grown up on. The campus photograph shows a place that its Michigan visitors would have measured by how well its lessons reached their own fields.
