Michigan Agricultural College sat on its farmland just outside Lansing in 1912, nearly sixty years after the state legislature chartered it in 1855 as the first agricultural college in the United States. Its campus was built around farming, dairy and livestock work, and engineering and the mechanical arts, training young men and, by then, growing numbers of women for agricultural careers. Lansing itself had become a center of manufacturing, with automobile works such as the Olds and REO companies employing many of its residents alongside the state government in the capital. Students, professors and farm families in the region tended to know the college as the place where scientific farming was taught, and the campus was a central point of pride for the surrounding community.
