Jackson, Michigan, in 1912 was a manufacturing city built around its railroad lines, where foundries, carriage works, and parts makers supplied a region shifting from horse-drawn wagons to the automobile. The Hayes Wheel Company, which made wheels for the new motor vehicles, drew workers from the city's neighborhoods and added to the payroll that kept local shops busy. Residents also remembered Jackson as the site of the 1854 gathering under the oaks that is often cited as the founding of the Republican Party, a reputation that sat comfortably beside its newer identity as an industrial town. As automakers across the Midwest ordered parts in growing volume, the wheel plant tied Jackson's fortunes to that expanding market.
