Michigan Agricultural College stood beside the Red Cedar River in 1910, a few miles east of Lansing's downtown, which had been the state capital since 1847. The capital's economy was shifting toward the automobile, with Ransom E. Olds's companies and the Reo Motor Car Company drawing skilled machinists and engineers to the city's factories. Students on the campus often walked or rode into town to see the new car works and the legislators at the Capitol, so the college stood between the farm fields of the countryside and the industrial bustle of the city. Many of its students came from small Michigan towns and farms, and they would have known the campus as the place where their families' questions about soil, livestock, and machinery were answered.
