Mackinac Island, Michigan, in 1910 was a summer resort that lived on the steamers bringing visitors across Lake Huron from Detroit, Chicago, and Cheboygan. Its hotels, cottages, and boardinghouses depended on tourists who came for the cool lake air and the island's quiet. The island had banned automobiles, so horses, carriages, and bicycles still moved people along its roads, and the old British and American fort on the bluff drew visitors who came to see the Revolutionary and War of 1812 history tied to the Straits. Residents who were not in the tourist trade fished, farmed small plots, and worked the docks and kitchens that the season required.
