Mount Pleasant, the county seat of Isabella County, was a small central Michigan town in 1910, where farming had replaced much of the earlier logging economy and the local teachers' college gave the community much of its identity. The Mount Pleasant Indian Industrial Boarding School, operated by the federal Office of Indian Affairs since 1893, housed and schooled children from Ojibwe, Odawa, Potawatomi, and other Great Lakes families. Students divided their days between classrooms and practical work in trades, farm chores, and housekeeping, a schedule meant to prepare them for wage labor and assimilation into white society. Residents knew the school as a visible part of town life, and this panoramic view records its grounds and buildings a few years before the school's later decline.
