In 1930, Interlochen was a small village in the cutover country of northwestern Michigan, southwest of Traverse City, where the great white pine forests had been logged out a generation earlier. Farming on sandy soil, orchard fruit, and seasonal work in the Grand Traverse region supported most families, and the village school drew students from the surrounding farms and settlements. The high school's stone and frame buildings sat near the lakes that the region's summer visitors had long valued. Only two years earlier, the National Music Camp had opened on the same grounds, so the school's students shared the campus with a growing summer population of young musicians. The economic slump that followed the 1929 stock market crash was just beginning to reach rural Michigan in 1930.
