Manchester, the seat of Delaware County in northeastern Iowa, was in 1913 a farm-trade town whose fortunes rose and fell with the surrounding fields of corn, oats, and hogs. Farm prices had been strong through much of the decade, and many families in the county were able to pay for schooling beyond the grades, so a high school building like this one drew students from town and from the countryside around it. Schools of this kind were central to local pride, hosting commencement exercises, athletic contests, and literary societies that gave young people a public stage. Like most small Iowa towns of the period, Manchester depended on its merchants, churches, and rail and road links to the wider state, and its residents would have measured their town by the strength of its schools and the success of its harvest.
