Twin Falls, Idaho, in 1913 was a young town of only about a decade, built on the irrigated Snake River plain that promoters had opened to farming after the Milner Dam and canal system began delivering water in the early 1900s. Its economy rested on irrigated crops, including alfalfa and grain, and on the Oregon Short Line railroad, which carried farm produce out and brought settlers in. Families who arrived to claim small tracts were often building their first permanent houses and institutions at the same time, and a public high school stood as a sign that the community expected to stay. The school was a point of local pride, and it shaped the civic life of a town where nearly everyone had come from somewhere else in the last few years.
