Hailey, the seat of Blaine County in south-central Idaho, owed its existence to the silver and lead strikes of the early 1880s in the Wood River country. By 1913 the boom years had passed, but mining on the slopes above town, including the Carbonate district on the hill shown here, still drew prospectors, miners, and the merchants who supplied them. The Oregon Short Line railroad had reached the valley in the 1880s, linking Hailey to Shoshone and the wider rail network, and that connection kept ore, freight, and passengers moving. Residents of the era knew the town as a mining supply center and as the county's political and legal seat, where courthouse business, church life, and fraternal lodges set the rhythm of ordinary days.
