Alpheus Creek, Idaho, in 1913 sat in a state that still drew most of its wealth from the land: timber cut from the northern forests, silver, lead and zinc taken from mines in the mountains, and cattle and irrigated crops in the valleys. Idaho had been a state for only about twenty-three years, and rail lines such as the Oregon Short Line and the Northern Pacific's branches were carrying lumber and ore out while bringing settlers in. Federal reclamation projects, authorized by the 1902 Reclamation Act, were then opening new farmland in southern Idaho, which drew families looking for homesteads. In a remote drainage like this one, life centered on small communities, seasonal work, and the mill or mine that employed most of the men, and the creek itself mattered for water, travel, and summer recreation.
