Twin Falls, Idaho, in 1913 was a young irrigation town on the Snake River, not much more than a decade old. Its founders had built canals that turned the sagebrush of the Magic Valley into farmland, and the town's economy rested on those fields, with alfalfa, grain, sugar beets, and dairy shipped out by rail. The Oregon Short Line had brought the railroad in only a few years before, so freight and settlers arrived by train. This panorama of the civic center shows the public buildings of a county seat that was still defining itself, with its streets, offices, and civic institutions serving farm families who had come west for land and water. Residents of the day knew the place as a fast-growing irrigation community whose future depended on the canals and the crops they carried.
