Idaho Falls, known as Eagle Rock until 1891, sat on the Snake River in eastern Idaho in 1909 and had grown up around the river's falls, its ferry crossings, and the railroad that reached it in the 1880s. By the time this view was taken, the town's fortunes depended heavily on irrigation. Federal reclamation projects and private canal companies were turning the sagebrush plains of the upper Snake River valley into farmland, and the town served as a shipping and supply center for wheat, potatoes, sugar beets, and livestock. Local residents would have measured their progress in new water ditches, expanding railroad freight, and the steady arrival of settlers claiming irrigated homesteads.
