Roswell, a farming community in the Boise Valley of southwestern Idaho, was a place where a ranch like the Hurtt property depended on irrigation water drawn from the Boise River system. In 1909 the state was less than twenty years old, having entered the Union in 1890, and Boise's growth had been tied to the Oregon Short Line railroad since the early 1880s. Local families raised hay, grain, and orchard fruit for markets reached by rail, and irrigation ditches and canal companies shaped nearly every farm's prospects. Ranch owners in this period often commissioned large views of their land to show neighbors, buyers, and investors what a well-run irrigated place looked like.
