Payette, Idaho, in 1909 was a small farm town on the Payette River near its meeting with the Snake River in the western part of the state. Its economy rested on irrigated agriculture, with orchards and fields fed by canals that had turned the sagebrush benches of the valley into productive land over the previous two decades. The Oregon Short Line railroad gave farmers a way to ship fruit and produce to markets beyond the valley, and the town's growth followed the land's expansion. Across the Snake River lay the Oregon town of Ontario, so the two communities shared trade, ferry traffic, and a close daily relationship. The panorama records a town still defined by its fields, its main street, and the people who had settled there to farm.
