Payette, Idaho, sat in 1909 on the Payette River near its meeting with the Snake River in the southwestern part of the state, at the center of a farming valley that depended on irrigation. Water from canals turned the sagebrush flats into orchards and fields, and fruit, especially apples and prunes, became the valley's signature crop, shipped out by rail. The Oregon Short Line, a Union Pacific subsidiary, gave growers a link to markets in the Northwest and beyond, while the town's stores, churches, and schools served the families who had moved west to claim irrigated land. Many residents would have known Payette chiefly as a fruit-growing community still in its early years of expansion, where new orchards were being planted and the valley's future seemed tied to water and rail.
