Weiser, the seat of Washington County in west-central Idaho, sat in 1909 where the Weiser River meets the Snake River, and its economy rested on irrigated farming in the valley around it. Orchards, alfalfa, and grain fields depended on canals drawn from the rivers, and the town's merchants, banks, and grain and produce dealers served the farm families who came into town on Saturdays. The Oregon Short Line railroad gave the town its link to markets east and west, and it carried the valley's crops and livestock out while bringing in supplies and settlers. Idaho had been a state only since 1890, and in 1909 Weiser was still a young community working out its civic life, with schools, churches, and county government forming the center of local identity.
