Pocatello, Idaho, in 1909 was a railroad town that had grown up after the Oregon Short Line reached the site in 1889, and its rail yards and repair shops were the largest source of local employment. The town took its name from the Shoshone chief Pocatello and sat on the Portneuf River, serving as the seat of Bannock County. Railroad payrolls, freight moving through the region, and the farms of the surrounding valley shaped daily life, and residents knew the town as the Gate City for its place on the route into southeastern Idaho. Civic life centered on downtown merchants, churches, and county offices, while train schedules and shift whistles set the rhythm of the day.
