Shoshone Falls, on the Snake River in south-central Idaho, was already a famous sight in 1909, with a drop of about 212 feet that people often compared to Niagara. The falls sat a few miles from Twin Falls, a town founded only a few years earlier as part of a large irrigation effort in the Snake River Plain. Canals and the Milner Dam were turning sagebrush desert into farmland for alfalfa, sugar beets, and grain, and the railroad that served the area carried those crops out. Visitors came to see the falls as an outing, and locals measured the valley's progress by how far the water had been pushed onto new fields.
