In 1913, Shoshone Falls on the Snake River drew families from the young farm settlements of south-central Idaho, who reached the rim by wagon and, increasingly, by automobile over improving roads. Power from the river's drop was already being put to use for lights and pumps in nearby towns, so the falls worked as an energy source as well as a scenic stop. Idaho had been a state for only about two decades, and its growth depended heavily on mining and irrigation projects that drew investment from outside the region. Local people knew the falls less for its height than for the picnics, church outings, and holiday gatherings held along its edge.
