Idaho Falls, Idaho, in 1909 was a young railroad and farming town on the Snake River, renamed from Eagle Rock in 1891 and serving as the seat of Bonneville County. Its economy rested on irrigated farmland, where settlers grew grain, hay, potatoes, and sugar beets, and on the Oregon Short Line and Utah and Northern lines that moved those crops and the livestock raised around them. The falls that gave the town its name were a local landmark, and the river's power and water were central to talk about dams, canals, and the federal irrigation projects that were then reshaping the eastern Snake River Plain. Residents of the period would have known Idaho Falls as a place of churches, schools, and civic clubs, where a large share of the population had roots in Mormon settlement and where the business district was growing along the railroad.
