Idaho Falls in 1909 was a young railroad and farm town on the Snake River in eastern Idaho, a place that had taken its present name only in 1891, when it was still widely known as Eagle Rock. Its growth depended on the rail lines that met there and on the irrigated farmland spreading across the Snake River plain, where settlers, many of them from Latter-day Saint communities to the south, grew grain, hay, and vegetables. Water from the river was the lifeblood of that economy, and the falls that gave the town its name also offered power for mills and early electric service. Residents in 1909 would have known the town as a farm supply and shipping point, a place where the sound of trains and the rhythm of the irrigation season set the pace of daily life.
