Twin Falls, Idaho, in 1913 was a young irrigation town on the Snake River Plain, barely a decade old. Its founders, the Twin Falls Land and Water Company, had built canals to carry river water onto the high sagebrush desert, and the town grew up to serve the farms that followed. Settlers recruited from the East and Midwest were planting alfalfa, grain, potatoes, and sugar beets, and dairying was spreading as well. Shoshone Falls, a few miles upriver, drew visitors, but most residents would have known the town for its water, its farms, and the railroad that brought in supplies and carried out crops.
