Mackay, Idaho, in 1909 was a young mining town in the Big Lost River valley of Custer County, in the high country below the Lost River Range. It took its name from John William Mackay, the Comstock Lode silver magnate, whose money backed mining ventures in the district. Residents made their living from the mines and the smelting and freight work that supported them, and the town's fortunes rose and fell with ore prices and the development of its claims. The valley was remote, and getting ore, supplies, and people in and out depended on wagon roads and the rail connections that served the surrounding region. The panoramic view of the town's streets and frame buildings shows a settlement still young and built around extraction, with the mountains rising close behind it.
