Blue Lakes Farm, photographed in 1913, sat in the irrigated Snake River country of south-central Idaho, an area that had been dry sagebrush until canal builders brought river water onto it in the decade before. Settlers from the East and Midwest arrived in numbers after 1904, when the Twin Falls townsite was platted, and by 1913 their farms were turning out alfalfa, grain, hay, and dairy products for local markets and the railroads that served the valley. Irrigated land was expensive to develop, so families often ran small, intensive operations and relied on neighbors to keep the canals and ditches in working order. For the people who lived there, a farm like this stood for the hard-won promise of the new irrigation district, where water rights and land payments shaped daily life.
