Manchester, Iowa, in 1908 was the seat of Delaware County in the northeast part of the state, where the town's life revolved around farming and the trade that moved through it. Corn, oats, hogs, and dairy cattle came in from the surrounding countryside, and in the early twentieth century the railroad was the main link to larger markets such as Dubuque and Chicago. Like many Iowa county seats of that era, Manchester was home to stores, churches, fraternal lodges, and a courthouse that anchored local government and public business. Residents in 1908 would have known their town first as a farm trading center, a place where the rhythm of planting, harvest, and market day set the calendar.
