Missouri Valley, Iowa, in 1908 was a small railroad and farm town on the Missouri River in Harrison County, in the western part of the state. Its growth rested on the rail lines that carried grain, livestock, and hogs out of the surrounding farmland, and the river bottoms and rolling bluffs nearby kept much of the countryside in corn and pasture. Like many Iowa county seats and junction towns of that era, it had churches, schools, and main-street businesses that served farm families who came to town on Saturdays to trade and visit. A photograph taken from a high vantage point at that time would have shown a community that understood itself through its depots, grain elevators, and the steady work of the farms beyond the edge of town.
