Lake Mills, in Winnebago County in north-central Iowa, was in 1908 a farm town whose economy rested on corn, hogs, cattle, and the grain elevators and rail lines that moved them to market. Iowa was then among the leading corn and livestock states in the country, and farmers from the surrounding countryside brought their crops and stock to town to sell. The nearby lakes, Clear Lake especially, drew summer visitors who arrived by train and by road, giving the area a seasonal holiday trade. Residents would have known Lake Mills as a practical trading center, where a Saturday trip to town meant business, church, and news from the neighboring farms.
