In 1908, Clarinda was a small farming town and the seat of Page County in southwestern Iowa, where corn, hogs and cattle formed the backbone of local commerce. The Iowa Hospital for the Insane, a state institution that took patients from across Iowa, made the town known well beyond its county lines. State asylums of that era were often crowded, and superintendents relied on patient labor on farms, gardens and workshops to cut costs and keep residents occupied. Families in surrounding counties would have known the hospital as a major local employer and as the place relatives were sent when care at home failed. This view shows the institution's large buildings and grounds during a period when Iowa was still expanding its network of state care facilities.
